Bangladesh's leading cricketer Shakib Al Hasan is among 156 individuals charged in the murder of Mohammad Rubel, who was killed during protests organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka's Adabor area.
Rubel, a garment worker, was fatally shot on August 5 during the protests, and he died from his injuries on August 7.
The case, filed with the Adabor police station on August 22 by Rubel's father, Rafiqul Islam, accuses 154 local Awami League leaders and activists, along with Shakib and then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, of involvement in Rubel's death.
In addition to these named individuals, the case also includes 400-500 unnamed suspects.
According to the complaint, Rubel was participating in a peaceful protest on August 5, which was part of the Student Movement demanding quota reforms in government jobs. The protest was allegedly disrupted when unidentified assailants, acting on orders from Hasina and others, fired at the demonstrators. Rubel was struck twice in the chest by bullets and later succumbed to his injuries.
Shakib, who is currently competing in the Test series against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, is listed as suspect number 28 in the FIR filed by Rafiqul.
Shakib, who was elected as an MP from Magura-2 under the Awami League banner in the last general elections, has not returned to Bangladesh since the Awami League leadership, including Sheikh Hasina, left the country. Bangladesh is currently governed by an interim administration led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Recently, the newly elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Faruque Ahmed, indicated that Shakib’s future with the team might be in question if he cannot participate in domestic preparation camps, as was the case before the ongoing Test series against Pakistan.
